There are stories with morals and themes of those searching the world for vast fortunes of gold, diamonds, and silver. Explorers canvas the world for glory, fame, and fortune. There are those of us who seek more in our daily life who just want to be productive, healthy, and functional. True discovery is that we have the capability to achieve, attain, and succeed with what we have without searching all over the world for knowledge that is in our own backyard. We have the tools to draw from in our kit if we take the time realize that the tool is there.

Dorothy had the power all of the time but didn’t knowingly realize it until she was leaving Oz. Realizing that you are more capable and able takes some reminding.

I have a good idea of what I am supposed to do and be able to do.  When I deviate from the direction that I know that I need to go, I can falter. It took the assistance of a simple App on my iPhone called, Headspace: Meditation techniques for mindfulness, stress relief & peace of mind, to bring me back to balance, focus, and my path. For someone who preached the benefits of meditation, I had taken the tool out of the kit, only to leave a huge void in taking care of myself. Thanks to the App, I have regained focus and have re-constructed my daily practice.

Who would have that thought a piece of technology, like Headspace, could be so instrumental in reviving my peace and calm. I didn’t see it coming, but the App reminded me that I had the power all along and that I needed a nudge to return to my path. You can try it for 10 10-minute sessions, before you decide if you want to pay the monthly fee. I plan to stay with the product and see the benefits that it offers. This is a daily practice that I think that I can follow. You might look into it.

Ten More Apps That May Benefit People With Parkinson’s Disease

My first posting on Apps and Parkinson’s disease was so well-received that I thought I would share a few more:

1. Parkinson’s Drug Trials – is a clever little tool to research clinical trials and find information about research both past and present.

2.  ArtStudio-is a wonderful App to enhance your creativity and to expand your artistic expression!

3.  You Don’t Know Jack – is an oddball, quirky, outrageous, educational, irreverent, but entertaining trivia game show that you may enjoy.

4.  Everything-is a terrific App for listing whatever is on your mind and keeping it in one place.

5. PocketLife-is a sharp, well laid out calendar program that has a slick multi-calendar function to keep other people’s calendars as well.

6. WebMD-just keeps getting better!

7. PDLife-is an App made to monitor your Parkinson’s and to keep on track with your medications.

8.  Dosecast- is an easy to use App to keep track of your meds and doses. Don’t miss a dose and keep to your schedule.

9. AudioMemos-is a useful voice recorder App to hear your speech for voice therapy reasons or just for a voice memo or pure enjoyment.

10. PD Toolkit-an App from the National Parkinson Foundation is resource that covers a range of useful information from planning, symptoms,  diagnosis, and treatment.

Apps To Help Parkinson’s Disease?

PD Apps

A good App should make your life easier, educate, entertain, inform, or enlighten. For someone with Parkinson’s  disease (PD) who is seeking relief from  a wide range of symptoms (voice, balance, tremor, gait, and memory to name a few) there just may be an App for your iphone  or smart phone–and it may even be FREE!

The following are a just a few Apps that I have uncovered and use. While I have no medical data or solid evidence that they are making any real change, all I can do is suggest that you give it a try and see if they work for you. Here you go:

1) Voice Recorder – The voice recorder on the Ipod touch and Iphone is a marvelous tool to test the quality, strength, and loudness of your voice. The Program is simple to use and a great way to get instant vocal feedback on your own.

2) Speechie- Is a free text to voice App. The Program provides the user with a choice of 5 different voice options. All that is required is for the user to type in what he/she wants the voice to say, tap the button and the voice speaks what you wrote. It’s that easy! If you want to complicate it, the Program allows you to alter the speed and pitch of the voice. Speechie may be helpful for anyone who can still type but has difficulty with speech.

3) Sound Level-is a free App(or pay for a version) that monitors the loudness of sounds–it’s your own portable sound meter. This may just help you monitor and maintain a louder voice and keep people from asking you to speak up.

4) Lists-I love a good list and I find that a list can often help keep me organized. Lists is an organizational genie as it allows lists with sub-lists within sub-lists. The App is easy to use and worth the time!

5) Sleep Machine-has a free and paid App (paid App has more sounds) made to lull you to sleep. Select from a variety of sounds to send you off to lala-land. Crickets, wind chimes, and pouring rain are just a few of the many soothing sounds from which to choose.  PD patients can face sleep problems that only exacerbate our symptoms when we aren’t totally refreshed. Now, there may be a free App to relax you and help you get a few more winks.
