Stretch and Grow-10 Keys to Maximizing Your Happiness and Growth

  1. Never lose the curiosity and desire to learn more about everything! Science, art, music, history, and the world around us can feed our quest for knowledge and understanding as we continue to learn.

  2. Try picking up a new talent or improving upon an old one. If you enjoyed playing an instrument, performing magic, shuffling and dealing cards, juggling, whistling, telling a joke, then think hard on what would bring you the greatest joy to add to your abilities, and explore it.

  3. As we age, keeping focus becomes more of a challenge. Work on maintaining focus with brain games, puzzles, reading, and even video games.

  4. Singing and keeping conversation are good for voice and concentration.

  5. Challenging yourself and enjoying yourself at the same time, is very satisfying.

  6. Music keeps me inspired, active, and makes my day so much more enjoyable.

  7. I love to-do lists and marking off my completions–it just feels good!

  8. Fear happens to all of us–when we can reduce our fear and anxiety, everything seems to get better.

  9. Giving back and focusing less on ourselves can result in helping everyone involved.

  10. Being bad can be fun–sometimes eating something that makes you smile, turning off the phone for a few hours, or having a late-night ice cream party can reignite the kid in us that we forget sometimes.

A Twenty Year Old Speech Rings True

I was going through my files of paperwork and came across years of documents that I considered to be motivational, inspirational, and truly worth being read and reread. You might even remember it.

Although this following post is not specifically Parkinson’s disease related, I find it to be sound and practical advice for everyone. I hope that you enjoy it, find at least 1 of the 10 pieces of advice to be a morsel to take away, and may even share once again with others:

10. Live off of your parents as long as possible.
9. Pursue joy—not happiness.
8. Challenge the known and embrace the unknown.
7. Learn to speak a foreign language, play a musical instrument, and play no contact sports.

If I were to add to this thoughtful list, I might add – Tell the people in your life and those you care about, just how much they mean to you, while you still can!

Advice worth consideration

Oh Joy!

How do you define a “good day”? The elements that compose the day are subjective and may easily be disrupted to alter what was going so well. From moment to moment that which brings us pleasure or contentment is liable to ruin by an unexpected act or outside influence. Most of us are likely to dwell on the disruption as opposed to the interrupted enjoyment.

Staying focused on the positive takes practice and a clear vision. How we perceive our place in any situation is a matter of perspective. From another’s viewpoint what you think to be a horrible place, others may envy.

Identifying and savoring the simplest of moments should not be overlooked. Remember the taste of a great meal, the sweet essence of your favorite flowers in a breeze, or the chorus of croaking tree frogs on a warm summer night. High expectations can be met with simple pleasures, but expecting too much only sets us up for disappointment. Living a life of gratitude and not envy, may just be the secret to happiness.
